With the company of his brother Rodrigo, Miguel enters in the spanish army, he fights in the Lepanto battle where he recieves two bullets in the chest and other in the left hand. His hand will be unused for the rest of his life. This is the reason why Cervantes is also noun like the one-handed of Lepanto
